Introduction
Ants are social insects and are in the same collective order as bees and wasps known as Hymenoptera. Ants are natural predators and scavengers and can vary significantly in size depending on the species. Ants body composition is made up segments including the head, thorax and abdomen.
Australia is home to 4000 species of ants, with only a minority of that considered to be a pest for humans. Some Ant species are highly aggressive and can inflict painful bites causing severe reactions to high risk or anaphylactic individuals. Symptoms of ant bites include:
- Swelling around the bite
- Itching
- Pain
Severe Symptoms (Seek Medical Attention):
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Abdominal Pain
- Dizziness
- Unconsciousness

Ant Bite First Aid
Some people are at a greater risk of severe reactions to ant bites including young children, the elderly and individuals with anaphylactic issues.
First Aid:
- Was the bite area with soap and water and apply a cold pack to reduce the pain
- If the person has an ant sting allergy or experiencing anaphylaxis seek medical attention ASAP and apply an EpiPen if required
