Introduction
Spiders are described as arachnids, a class of animal that includes scorpions, ticks, harvestmen and mites.
Their body composition consists of two main body parts, eights legs, eyes, piercing jaws, and silk spinning organs. Spiders usually feed on insects which can be beneficial in some circumstances. There are over 2000 spider species in Australia, the majority are harmless and will only bit in defence if threatened or accidentally touched. Although, some species of spiders, such as the white tailed spider are known to be aggressive and can inflict a painful bite.
Humans are generally bitten by spiders on accident and the extent of the spider venom usually only causes localised pain and swelling, in some severe cases individuals may experience symptoms such as,
- Interference with blood clotting
- Breakdown of muscle tissue
- Paralysis and effects on the cardiorespiratory system

Spider Bite First Aid
Some people are at a greater risk of severe reactions to spider bites including young children, the elderly and individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular disease issues.
First Aid:
- Was the bite area with soap and water and apply a cold pack to reduce the pain.
- If the bite is suspected to be from a funnel web or red back seek medical attention.
- If the bite is suspected to be from a Funnel web it's advised to apply pressure to the localised bite area and immobilise the victim ASAP.
- Pressure should never be applied to redback spider bites as this can magnify the pain.
- Generally no further first aid is required unless the individual is experiencing any of the severe symptoms listed above.

Some tips include:
- Installing flyscreens to windows and doors
- Installing weather strips or draft excluders to the bottom of doors to prevent ingress
